9:15-10:15am	Megan Katz	Web Conferencing with Elluminate	To access the pre-recorded session, enter the password "ets" Many of us use Elluminate's basic features to attend classes and interact with our professors. However, this diverse tool offers so much more: the ability to do presentations, sharing of specific applications (computer programs), opportunities to collaborate with colleagues, etc. This session in the ETS Symposium will review Elluminate's commonly-used features as well as discuss its many advanced options. Please join me for an in-depth look at an amazingly diverse resource that can greatly enhance your SLIS experience.
9:15-10:15am	Moana Evans	Social Cataloguing with LibraryThing	To access the pre-recorded sesson, enter the password "ets" LibraryThing is a web application that allows users to share their personal library catalogs with others online. Social applications include tagging, recommendation, and discussion of books. This session in the ETS Symposium will show attendees how to register their own personal catalog online and begin to use the many features of LibraryThing, and discuss the potential uses for social cataloging in libraries.
9:15-10:15am	Kelly Gordon* Kelly was recently recognized for her article "Fresh Perspectives on Reference Work in Second Life" in the Summer 2008 issue of Reference & User Services Quarterly*. Congratulations Kelly!	Creating Online Tutorials with Wink	To access the pre-recorded session, enter the password "ets" Wink is open source, easy-to-use software that allows the creation of professional-looking online tutorials. The Wink software allows capture of screenshots and mouse movements, as well as the addition of explanatory text boxes or voiceover. In this session, we'll discuss downloading Wink, using the features described above,and some general pointers for the creation of effective online tutorials. Download Wink before the session to fully take advantage of hands-on activities during our time together! View some sample Wink tutorials. NOTE: At the present time, Wink is only available for machines running Windows or Linux. Mac users are welcome to attend the session but will not be able to download software or participate in hands-on activities.

Erik Sandall	Jumpstart with iGoogle	To access the pre-recorded session, enter the password "ets" Why use Google.com as your homepage when you can have so much more? iGoogle is a personalized start page that offers information professionals a way to aggregate their online activity in one location. This free service allows users to add widgets that display their favorite RSS feeds, news headlines of interest to them, their email inbox, and much more. This session introduces start pages in general and iGoogle in particular; shows you how to find and add widgets for RSS feeds, email, and news; and teaches you how to create a specialized widget for your own use or to share with colleagues and clients.
10:30-11:30am	Erwin Magbanua	Introduction to Google Docs Sorry, no recording available.	Google Docs allows anyone to create and edit basic documents, presentations, and spreadsheets online. This free and easy tool also allows multi-user collaboration where selected users can work on a document together at the same time online and from any site. Google Docs is compatible with most popular file formats like DOC, XLS, ODT, ODS, RTF, CSV, and PPT. It also offers the convenience of accessing your files from any online computer at any time. This session will show you how to create and edit documents in Google Docs and will demonstrate its collaborative features, as well its other highly useful features.
10:30-11:30am	Susie Quinn	How to Create a Basic Audio Podcast using Audacity	To access the recorded session, enter the password "ets" This session is for anyone who is interested in creating their own audio podcast. There will a demo using Audacity, which is a free, open source software for recording and editing sounds. Audacity is available in Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows, GNU/Linux. If you would like to practice along, please download Audacity before the session. Download Audacity here.

Megan Berru	Photo Sharing and More with Flickr	To access the pre-recorded session, enter the password "ets" Flickr is a free photo sharing tool used by people all over the globe. In this session, you will learn some of the many applications for Flickr--not only for social photo sharing, but for reference and other library functions as well.

your Elluminate v8.5 (New!) connection in the Drop-In Center

The purpose of ETS is to help the SLIS Community at San Jose State University educate and learn from their peers. Using the web conferencing technology of Elluminate, ETS will provide hands-on, step-by-step instruction on emerging technologies as they apply to student life and the field of library and information science. Each online session will last an hour and participants are free to drop in and out at their discretion.

For Presenters

For those of us who are adept with recent technologies, we sometimes forget that there are many others who still have not traversed into these waters. Presenting at the Emerging Technologies Symposium is a great way to assist them while gaining instructional experience. It can also give concrete examples of SLIS competencies necessary for the LIBR 289 e-Portfolio. Look at the proposal form to get a sense of what technologies we are looking for and then go ahead and complete the form by June 26, 2008. Decisions about presenters will be made by ALASC in July.

You may take up to one (1) hour to present and provide step-by-step guidance. In that time, presenters are expected to

Post your photo (or any image) to their ETS profile and provide some information about yourself. (This is a great way to get to know fellow SLISsers.) Either through handouts or your profile, make it as easy as possible for participants to get to know you and contact you.
Post a description of your session and what you intend to focus on. Feel free to continually modify your program on this wiki and provide the following information to help others gain the most from your session.
- any specifications necessary to use the product(s)
- whether your experience is which Macs or PCs, Firefox or Internet Explorer, VISTA or Windows XP, etc.)
- link to product website
- price if applicable
- whether or not a product download is necessary
Discuss the purpose of the technology and how it can be useful to their graduate studies and/or the LIS field.
Walk participants through opening an online account with the product(s) you introduce and helping them download the software where necessary.
Encourage participation by limiting your own talking time and encouraging questions.

ALASC will also provide presenters with moderator training in Elluminate, the web conferencing software that will be used at ETS.

The tone of the conference is meant to be relaxed and non-threatening for both presenters and participants. It is meant to encourage the exchange of knowledge and give experience to SLISsers. Since this is a learning environment for both presenters and participants, ALASC does not expect perfection from its presenter, but rather that all have a good time and leave with tangible skills and experience with emerging technologies.

Participants are free to jump in and out of sessions and explore throughout the symposium.

Once your proposal has been approved, please post your Presenter Profile and any handouts by September 1, 2008. We also encourage you to post your resume or a link to your online professional profile.
